Truck and track-mounted reelers

Project Location

Project Overview

Kiewit Power Constructors Co. reached out to KEE to have us develop custom trailers capable of transporting 90,000 LB, 14 FT diameter cable reels.

Innovative Custom Trailers for Heavy-Duty Cable Reel Transport

In addition to transport, the trailers needed to have a variety of other features and functions:

  • Reel drive: electrically driven rollers to turn the reel to aid in cable payout
  • Load share and reel placing aids: hydraulically actuated arbor supports and drive wheel swing arms that can be independently actuated and cushioned to help with placing a reel into the trailer and with load share during travel.
  • Fairleads: forward and aft to ensure controlled cable payout
  • Work platform: OSHA-compliant work area to drive the trailer functions and observe operation
  • Power/Controls: onboard HPU and electrical panels powered by site generator. These include both electrical and hydraulic controle methods for various trailer functions
  • Outriggers: hydraulically-actuated stabilizer legs
  • Lightweight and maneuverable: analysis and optimization to bring the main trailer frame down to just 20,000 LB at 15 FT wide and 40 FT long. Custom jeep and dolly with kingpin and pivot tube to allow smooth transport of this large, permitted load.

Working with Tim Rohda and the Kelley Engineered Equipment team has been pivotal in our HVDC cable-pulling operations' success. Their commitment to quality, innovative engineering, and great customer support ensures that our cable drum trailer is built to last for our demanding projects.
