Howard Street Tunnel Project

Rail Based Gantry Cranes

Project Location

Baltimore, MD

Project Overview

Improvement and enlargement of the existing CSX rail tunnel to allow for the transport of double stacked ocean containers on freight rail cars.  To accomplish this, the existing tunnel invert is being removed and lowered to increase headroom. The KEE supplied gantries are facilitating the installation of new precast invert segments throughout the tunnel.

The gantries are self-powered and mounted on AAR type rail trucks for ease of positioning the large, heavy loads.  To date this system is outperforming production forecasts despite supply chain issues with the precast segments.
