Transmountain Expansion Project
Burnaby Pipe Installation System
Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada
The original Trans Mountain Pipeline was built in 1953. The Expansion is essentially a twinning of this existing 1,150-kilometer Canadian pipeline between Strathcona County (near Edmonton), Alberta and Burnaby, BC. The nominal capacity of the system is going from approximately 300,000 barrels per day to 890,000 barrels per day. Part of the Expansion Project includes construction of a 4+ m dia, 2.6 km long mechanically excavated tunnel through Burnaby Mountain to connect Burnaby Terminal to Westridge Marine Terminal. The new tunnel will contain three, 30-inch delivery pipelines to load vessels at Westridge. These pipes need to be placed safely while simultaneously installing their permanent support structure.
Kelley Engineered Equipment (KEE) was engaged Kiewit Ledcor TMEP Partnership (KLTP), the contracting JV, to design and supply unique pipe installation systems to be deployed at each portal. This document focuses on the equipment used to simultaneously thrust the 3 ea, 30” dia x 700” long pipes from the Burnaby Portal down grade through the curved tunnel alignment.
